Maya Hatch

Maya Hatch was exposed to music the very moment her mother gave birth to her on August 18, 1985. As the emergency room in Olympia, Washington filled up with the exquisite sounds of Stevie Wonder (from the cassette player), perhaps it was fated that Maya would follow in his footsteps with the dream of singing for the happiness of humanity. Maya began singing at the age of eight when she joined the Sadako Peace Choir, a multi-cultural children's choir in her home town Seattle, Washington. After graduating from elementary school, Maya and her family moved to Tokyo, Japan where they resided for four years. There Maya sang in studio recordings for Japan's top educational television station (NHK), acted and sang as a lead in two musical productions ("Anne of Green Gables" and "FAME") at a local theater company in Tokyo, and auditioned on a nationally televised talent competition ("Chansu no Dendo"/ "The Palace of Chance" on TBS) to become a Japanese pop singer. She made it to the final 4 contestants out of a pool of 14,000 and appeared on TV once a week for six months. Although the show abruptly ended and eventually no one emerged as the winner, the experience affirmed Maya's passion to become a professional singer. Maya was introduced to jazz after returning to the states. As a sophomore, Maya was accepted into Roosevelt High School's prestigious vocal jazz ensemble, performing and traveling the nation to compete in jazz festivals winning both ensemble and soloist awards. Namely, the "Outstanding Musician" award at Elliot Bay Jazz Festival (Seattle) in 2004, the "Outstanding Musicianship" award at Reno International Jazz Festival (Reno) in 2003 and 2004 and Second Place in the Alto Vocal Soloist Competition at Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival (Idaho) in 2004. Upon her high school graduation in 2004, Maya was awarded a generous scholarship from The New School in New York City to attend a 5 year dual-degree program at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and Eugene Lang College, The New School for Liberal Arts. After studying under the direction of jazz giants such as Chico Hamilton, Junior Mance, Jane Ira Bloom, & Rachel Z, Maya graduated in May of 2009 with a BFA in Jazz Performance and a BA in Education Studies. In 2008, Maya was signed to Spice of Life, an independent jazz label in Japan. Her debut album entitled "My Foolish Heart" was released in Japan on November 18, 2009. On this album, recorded in June of 2009 at Avatar Studios in NYC, Maya is accompanied by an outstanding young jazz trio: Gerald Clayton on piano, Ben Williams on bass, and Quincy Davis on drums. After touring Japan twice (first in November of 2009 and then again in February of 2010), Maya was offered a position to star regularly as a singer on "Ponkikki," a popular and beloved children's television show which has aired on Japanese television since 1973. With this opportunity as her incentive, Maya relocated from New York City to Tokyo in April of 2010, appearing on BS Fuji TV's children's show newly named "Be-Ponkikki" for a year (from April 2010 until March 2011). In the fall of 2011, Maya's voice was featured on a Japanese mainstream commercial for Unilever's shampoo product "LUX Super Rich" which featured Hollywood actress Odette Annable. The song Maya sang (and wrote lyrics for) entitled "Grow Your Beauty" received such widespread praise that a full version of the song was recorded for inclusion in "Jazz Now," a compilation album released by EMI Music Japan on December 21, 2011. Since then Maya has been featured on many mainstream commercials including Docomo's Galaxy Note Edge commercial in 2014. Maya's highly anticipated second album "Li'l Darlin'" was released by Spice of Life on September 26, 2012. This album features the same pianist & bassist from her first album - Gerald Clayton (piano) & Ben Williams (bass) along with New School alumni Jamire Williams (drums) & Keyon Harrold (trumpet). In addition to New School alum/pianist/composer Warren Fields' contemporary yet sophisticated arrangements of classic jazz standards, this album also features some of Maya's original music and lyrics. Maya's new single with Japanese rapper Sphere of Influence entitled "Time is of the Essence" was featured on the soundtrack of the TOHO hit movie "NOBUNAGA CONCERTO" and was released by Avex in January of 2016. As of March 11, 2017, Maya's singing, rapping, and original lyrics can be heard on 5 songs throughout the new TOHO hit film "Let's Go, Jets!" / "Chia-Dan (Cheer Dance)." Although Maya resigned from Spice of Life in June of 2013, she continues to make her mark on the Japanese music scene. With recent performances with jazz giants such as Ron Carter, hip-hop icons such as ZEEBRA, and Japanese pop stars such as EXILE ATSUSHI and Shikao Suga, Maya demonstrates her wide musical ability to seamlessly cross genres and win the hearts of her listeners with her unique and sincere voice.
