KATAGI

KATAGI means "a civilian with no underworld affiliations." The name reflects my stance on life "that you don't have to succumb to your environment." Born and raised in grimy Downtown Eastside Vancouver, some of the first artists I ever listened to were N.W.A. and LL Cool J. From there I got deep into rap, listening to artists like Eric B. & Rakim, Ice-T, and later Wu-Tang Clan etc. Most of my earlier releases as KATAGI reflect this as my focus was on rapping solid lyrics over top notch beats. After moving to North Vancouver I got involved with the local punk scene by writing for punk zines and organizing shows at school. My punk and grunge influences can be heard on my more recent releases and are further explored with my side project heyshibuya. I am currently based in Japan.
