KATAGI

Japanese Canadian rapper KATAGI a.k.a. katagi!x was born and raised in Downtown Eastside Vancouver, an area known for poverty, drugs, and mental illness. As a high school student he was heavily influenced by punk's anti-conformity ethos and author Ayn Rand's philosophical system called Objectivism. He was a member of several bands around this time. After moving to Tokyo in his early twenties, he joined forces with some of Japan's top producers such as UTA, U-Key zone, and DONKOOL to create a new sound which garnered a lot of label interest. After turning down several record deals in the mid to late 2000s, he took a hiatus from music to focus on his other ventures. In 2020, after a short stint as a controversial YouTuber, he launched his new musical project "katagi!x" where he combines elements of various genres including trap, emo rap, and bedroom pop to create a sound that's both original and unlike any other.
