The tale begins in a classic, fairy-tale tone:
"Once upon a time, in a certain place, there lived an old man and an old woman..."
One day, while washing clothes by the river,
the old woman discovers a giant peach floating toward her.
When she brings it home and the couple cuts it open,
a healthy baby boy leaps out.
Believing him to be a divine blessing,
the couple names the child Momotaro-
"The Peach Boy."
He grows strong and brave.
One day, he declares:
"I'm going to Oni Island to defeat the evil ogres."
Taking millet dumplings prepared by the old woman,
Momotaro sets off on his journey.
Along the way, he befriends a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant,
each joining him in exchange for a dumpling.
Finally reaching Oni Island,
they find the ogres in the midst of a wild feast,
surrounded by treasure stolen from the nearby villages.
Momotaro shouts:
"Everyone, attack!"
The dog bites from behind,
the monkey scratches their backs,
the pheasant pecks at their eyes,
and Momotaro fights with powerful sword strikes.
At last, the ogre leader falls to his knees:
"We give up! We surrender! Please spare us!"
With the stolen treasures safely reclaimed,
Momotaro and his loyal companions return home triumphantly.
The old couple rejoices at his safe return,
and together the three live happily ever after.
