Mika Otsuka

Mika "mikana" Otsuka A 21 year old singer born in Ashikaga, Tochigi(Japan). She made her debut in 2014 as a member of a girls dance and vocal group called Watarasebashi43, with an intent to promote her hometown of Ashikaga to the rest of Japan and the world. As a group, Watarasebashi43 reached No.2 daily and No.32 weekly on Oricon chart, the Japanese equal to the Billboard top 100. Since 2017 she has been performing as a solo singer. Her encounter with Hawaii occurred in March 2017, when she was funded by Ashikaga City Tourism Association to promote Ashikaga in Honolulu Festival. She immediately fell in love with Hawaii and its people. There she made an impact on people in Hawaii and started visiting Hawaii as a member of Ashikaga Meisen Aloha Project. She released her 1st solo CD "Ai no uta - A Song of Love," a song written by a Hawaiian girl, China Voinovich. Its lyrics illustrates the story of the origin of aloha shirts, which is said to be born when Japanese immigrants reformed their kimono into work shirts. Written by a Hawaiian girl and words by Shun Eguro, Mika's producer, the song is meant to honor the 150th anniversary of Gannenmono arrival in Hawaii. The Ashikaga Meisen Aloha Project produced aloha shirts with kimono pattern as a joint project with Kona Bay Hawaii, and handed them to Governor Ige and the first lady as a sign of friendship between Hawaii and Japan. Her performances and active contributions to Gannenmono events receive attention both in Hawaii and Japan. NHK worldwide broadcast Mika and Shun Eguro, her producer, and their effort and project. One of the audience was Maria Niino, a master Kumu Fla under George Naope, who accepted Mika as her haumana. Niino wrote lyrics for a song "Inochi 100nen utsukushiku," the song of which was sung by Shinichi Mori, one of the great master singer of enka, in the 100 year anniversary event for Japanese immigrants coming to Hawaii. Now in 2018 when Gannenmono ceremony is held, Mika Otsuka will sing the song for the Japanese in Hawaii.
