Mafia & Fluxy, who are renowned as the UK's Sly & Robbie play the rhythm track and the two Heywood brothers also play bass and drums on Exodus, which remains a rallying cry of real impetus in Akiko's hands, even when stripped of its inspirational lyrics. Chic's Nile Rodgers, who has produced massive hits by Madonna, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Sister Sledge among others, lends trademark funky guitar licks also Mix to Akiko's version. Former Chic bassist Bernard Edwards died after a show in Tokyo during 1996 and Nile still visits Japan each year to commemorate his passing. Akiko first met him in Tokyo during March 2010. She'd arrived in Tokyo after a sleepless night travelling from Sapporo just in time to join him for breakfast and they've remained friends ever since. Several months later, in August 2010, Maxi and Akiko visited Nile at his home studio in Connecticut, where his contributions - on Exodus and Is This Love - were recorded. It was the first time he'd ever played with a Japanese artist and Akiko says there was so much magic in the air that day, it coincided with the most spectacular sunset she's ever seen.
Tomoko Kageyama, who first surfaced on Groovin' In The Midnight from Akiko's first album, added those amazing xylophone flourishes to Exodus during the Japanese sessions. Apparently she's tiny in size and very quiet, yet Tomoko clearly becomes a colossus whenever she's playing (as does Akiko herself!)
Marley recorded the original cut of Exodus in London after surviving an assassination attempt back in Jamaica. In 1977 it became the title track of his breakthrough LP, which Time Magazine voted 'Album Of The Century.' Akiko covers two further tracks from Exodus on this album and they're both timeless.

Akiko Moriyako is a musician of rare elegance whose sound poems whilst wholly contemporary convey a depth and tranquillity that could only be inspired by ancient Japanese tradition. For this extraordinary debut album she is chosen to reinterpret the work of international reggae star Maxi Priest or rather those songs that in Akiko own words remain hidden. She uses the analogy of a Samurai sword left unsheathed because whilst some of them were hits the majority can only be found on Maxi albums and have seldom been performed on stage. That is because despite their obvious merits they were among the more gentle and restrained songs of his repertoire. Akiko approach is an unusual, yet richly rewarding one. Unlike say Charlie Hunter or Ernest Rang who translated reggae classics into jazz she is chosen to reach into the very heart of these songs and reinterpret them with the same delicacy of awareness as a master of Ikebana or Kado the Japanese way of flowers would wherein nature and humanity and in her case, music are joined together in perfect harmony. The results are often trance like and impressionistic as heard in the best of New Age music.
