AKIKO'S COSMO SPACE is a new Japanese space-rock band led by drummer, singer, keyboardist and percussionist Akiko TAKAHASHI, best known as the drummer in the Japanese Progressive rock band ARS NOVA. Formed in Tokyo in the year 2014, the music of AKIKO'S COSMO SPACE utilizes elements of many different musical genres, including Progressive rock, punk-rock, classical music, traditional world-music and space-rock. The widely varied tracks of "Julähsica To This Wonderful Day" (Musea Parallèle, 2015) feature various instruments including drums, orchestral percussions and keyboards for the Master of Ceremony. Add to this guitar, bass, upright bass, tuba and erhu. Lyrics are sung in Akiko TAKAHASHI's own discovery: a cosmic-space language ! Guitarist Bill BERENDS (MASTERMIND) contributes guitar and vocal duets on several tracks, along with a cast of talented Japanese musicians. Let's note guitar player Ken MATSUTANI from the long-established Japanese psychedelic rock band MARBLE SHEEP, in which Akiko TAKAHASHI once played as a drummer, and its former female bassist Rie MIYAZAKI. Akiko's Cosmo Space
Those who know Akiko Takahashi only from her role as drummer in various incarnations of the Japanese instrumental keyboard-heavy trio Ars Nova may be in for a big surprise n this, the first release of her solo project Akiko's Cosmo Space. Julähsica means Cheers!, and indeed the tune here in are a joyful celebration of the wider range of Takahashi's musical interests, not only as a drummer, but as a capable songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist, enlisting friends from her other band Marble Sheep (guitarist bassist Rie Miyazaki), guitarist and singer Bill Berends from Mastermind, as well as guitarist Ken Matsutani and Takashi Mizoguchi, upright bassist Yasushi Tanaka, tuba player Toru Takada, and erhu player Yoshimi Inoue, along with recording engineer Miho Muira. If one tries to come up head in bewilderment. Cosmic? Not really, at least in the sense of the cosmiche sound pioneered by folks like Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze. Is it Space Rock? There are definitely some strong here within, but it's only a space rock / psychedelic threads on several of the songs small part of the overall vista. More than anything, this is in solid avant-garde progressive territory, very experimental and very Japanese. Takahashi sings on every track, others, sung in cosmo sometimes supported by Berends and backing vocals from sweetie language,and occasionally song are translated to English and Japanese; in the booklet the lyrics for every English and Japanese, and listeners steeped in Japanese progressive rock of the 80s and 90s should have no trouble with the vocal stylings. For her part, Takahashi mallet percussion, timpani, plays (in addition to drum kit keyboards, all songwriting and production. All taken, this is an adventurous and playful romp through a fantastic array of musical styles and avant-garde arrangements.
