This release is the fourth in the Cassette Gadget series. In the first half of 2001 (the 21st century), I completely rethought my approach to composition. Specifically, I dug deep into the content of the lyrics, writing the lyrics first and then creating the melody. I wrote over 30 songs during this period, and the majority of them would later appear on two albums. Many of the studies included here are little more than sketches. Most are one-take recordings of me strumming a poorly guitar. They're bare-bones, without the cosmetic of an arrangement, so there's little to entertain the listener. Still, they offer excellent material for examining my compositional process (although who knows what else might do so in the future, lol). The jacket photo was taken in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture by my wife.

Iwashita Keisuke Sardine

My name is Iwashita Keisuke, also known as Sardine. Over the 20 years from 1983 to 2003, I have recorded about 200 songs by myself. I compiled these into eight albums and released them one by one in 2024. In 2025, instead of an anthology, I will release an album edited in chronological order. Sardine's music is diverse. It ranges from accessible pop to socially conscious message songs, from progressive constructions to punk subversiveness. I'm a formidable pianist, a mad synthesizer player, a halting guitarist, a tone-reading bassist, a loose percussionist, and a clumsy singer-songwriter with solo multi-choruses. All of these parts are integrated into one persona. A mixture of romance, cold-heartedness and passion, depicting incoherent anxiety and yearning for something unattainable, this is an oldie but an evergreen.
