"Bringing Haniwa into Everyday Life" -The Art of HANIWANOWA
Haniwa stepping out of ancient tombs to play video games, go hiking, or enjoy pottery - these ancient clay figures are living their best modern lives! Inspired by the whimsical world of painted, illustrated, and sculpted haniwa created by the artist HANIWANOWA, we released the mini-album HANIWANOWA- ENJOY HANIWA LIFE.
Shortly after its release, I, Kimura, still riding the wave of my haniwa obsession, stumbled upon the announcement for the Jaga Record Awards 2025, supported by Calbee.
"Wait, haniwa eating potato chips? That's totally HANIWANOWA! Isn't it??"
In that moment, I could almost hear the rhythm and chorus of haniwa munching on potato chips, their crunches echoing in harmony. I immediately reached out to HANIWANOWA herself with my idea.
"Let's make it happen!" she exclaimed. And just like that, our long-awaited second collaboration came to life!
Big haniwa, small haniwa, horse-shaped, human-shaped, house-shaped -I pictured all kinds of haniwa joyfully munching on potato chips. I shook bags of chips to use as shakers, recorded the sound of opening bags as percussion, and more. This was, without a doubt, the most mouthwatering recording session I've ever experienced!
By the way, did you know? Nori-shio (seaweed and salt) chips make a light, crisp sound, while consomme-flavored chips have a smoother, softer tone!
P.S. All the chips used for recording were deliciously devoured by our staff.
And so, the world of haniwa music continues to grow!

Yumi KIMURA
Yumi KIMURA is a composer and Doctor of Arts who creates music inspired by everyday soundscapes, such as birdsong, the sound of brewing coffee, and other environmental sounds. She transforms the natural scales and rhythms found in these sounds into compositions with a distinctive atmospheric quality. Her versatile approach spans chamber music, orchestral works, traditional Japanese instruments, world music, and electronic compositions using DAW technology. / KIMURA provides musical arrangements for a diverse range of performers, organizations, and projects, including stage music for Japanese dance performances, sound design for visual works and exhibitions, and collaborations with classical and Japanese music performers and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. / At the "BEAT GRAND PRIX MUSEUM 2022," supported by TuneCore Japan, her music video "Voice of Crane," inspired by the crane migration in Izumi City, Kagoshima, was selected as a finalist. / For the "SOUND SEEK" event -organized by Nomura Kogei and selected by Tokyo's Digital Innovation City initiative- she created sound productions using the "Auris" audio MR system. Featuring tracks from her latest album "the sounds of neighborhood," this project delivered an immersive musical experience capturing the multisensory atmosphere of urban spaces. Drawing on insights from her academic research, she continues to explore new possibilities in music while uncovering the potential of sounds hidden in everyday life.
