The Melody Road begins to hum-I reach for harmony and miss, gloriously-and in that instant I can hear laughter spilling from the cabin of the yellow sports car beside me. The ridgeline wind cools my cheeks; WHITE and BLUE take turns soaking into the back of my eyes. Down from Kojiri to the lakeside. Through a thin veil of mist, the red of Hakone Shrine flickers. I'm about to be pulled into a parking queue and snap the indicator back; squeezing the stalk, the washer misfires-transparent pours over the windshield and I freeze. "Not steam, not tire smoke-just transparent."We crack up, then match the throttles. Ekiden Straight. One line of tarmac, one line of sound, one line of sight. The blue plane and the white stripe run straight through the center of my chest. On the climb back to Hakone Pass I drop a gear; clear the last corner and the lake flashes like a blade. Two taps of the hazards. Morning light settles quietly, and the small ring on the mirror trembles once. -Blue lap, complete.
