The third release by the Japanese mixed-gender gospel chorus group The BLISS, "Psalm 121", is, as its title suggests, a work inspired by a passage from the Old Testament. The song was written and arranged by Hisatsugu Noto, known for works such as SMAP's "Fly", Crystal Kay's "Tears", and Songs for Philosophy no Dance. In addition, bassist Kenta Horiki, who is active in Japan's gospel scene, joins as a guest performer.
Structured in three parts, the piece traces a journey backward through time as it unfolds, moving from alternative and contemporary gospel-represented by groups like the Sunday Service Choir-toward vintage gospel styles of the 1970s to 1990s, offering praise against a backdrop of these evolving styles and sonic elements.
With five new members, the group takes on a renewed formation, incorporating a youth choir and embracing new challenges through shifting expressions that include solos, duets, and full choir performances.
